I am a Qualified Technical Translator with practical experience in the
fields of electrical engineering, aviation technology and propulsion
systems.
After my apprenticeship to become a qualified electrician I worked in
switchgear construction (emergency power systems and control systems
for conveyor belts) and was concerned with the development and
construction of the same.
Between 1981 and 2002 I served as an Officer with the German Armed
Forces and was, among others, trained to be a ship technical officer
(main emphasis diesel and steam technology). However, my main
assignment was with the German Navy where I served as a Weapon System
Operator flying Tornado fighter jets and F-14 Tomcats during a three
year personnel exchange tour with the US Navy. During these assignments
I became familiar with the handling of technical documents and
handbooks and received comprehensive training in the fields of
aerodynamics, hydraulics, pneumatics, aircraft technology and
meteorology.
After I had left the Armed Forces I studied technical translation at
the University of Applied Sciences in Flensburg from 2003 to 2007 and
finished with a University Degree in Technical Translation.
The subject of my final thesis was the power production with geothermal
energy and includes a bilingual glossary in addition to technical and
linguistic aspects.
My studies included:
Translation (English to German, German to English), engineering
(information technology, mechanical and electrical engineering and
communication technology), language data processing (operating systems
(DOS, Windows), translation memory systems (TRADOS, SDLX, Deja vue,
Across), DTP with Framemaker, word processing with MS Word, and HTML
Programming), interpreting, terminology theory, translation theory and
regional studies.
I spend one semester at the Chilterns University College in High
Wycombe where I took linguistic and technical courses (website and
software programming). The time abroad also included a three month
placement with a translation agency where I built terminology databases
and proof-read translations.
I have been working as a freelance translator since 2007.
